Most five year olds love animals. Especially when they are sort off cool, unusual animals- take, for example, eels. In Goldsboro, NC in 2002, Eric Lane had three pets- a goldfish and two eels. Precious Whitfield, as most five year olds would be, was curious. Precious had been dropped off at her step-grandmother's house that afternoon to be watched for the day, and she had been allowed to go over to her friend Michael's house to play. At Michael's, Precious borrowed a bicycle and the two children rode up and down the driveway. It was then that they spotted Eric Lane in his front yard- or, more specifically, the swingset in his front yard (Lane had been drinking beer all day). The two children approached him, and asked if they could play on it. The children played for roughly ten minutes, with Lane pushing them, before Lane went to get Precious a soda. At that time, he brought up his pet eels. Precious and Michael requested to see them, and so Lane brought the children inside. There the two children played with the eels for a moment before returning to the swingset. There they stayed for a few minutes longer before riding back to Michael's house. Fifteen minutes later, Michael's mother told Precious it was time to leave, and Precious rode off on the bicycle. However, she didn't return home. Instead she returned to Lane's house to see the eels again. Precious played for about fifteen minutes in Lane's son's room before returning to the living room, where Lane began to play with her- tickling her. Lane blacked out. The next thing he can remember, he's on top of Precious. She was unconscious, and there was evidence he had raped her. Lane, panicking, wrapped the unmoving Precious in a trash bag, wound duct tape around her head, took her scooter and drove her to the creek where he, still drinking beer, dumped her bike and her body, leaving her there. However, Precious wasn't dead. She woke up. Finding herself bound and in a trash bag, she panicked and choked to death.
